Welcoming the Enchantment of Summer Solstice in Tuscany

Welcoming the Enchantment of Summer Solstice in Tuscany

On June 24th, the feast of Saint John the Baptist is celebrated with the festivities typically commencing around the 20th of the month.

This celebration, not only observed in Tuscany but throughout Italy, is characterized by the lighting of large bonfires, which encompass ancient pagan rituals. These rituals aimed to bestow more strength upon the sun because, from that day onward, the sun grew weaker as the days gradually became shorter until the winter solstice. Fire is not the only recurring element in the solstice celebrations: between the 23rd and the 24th, aromatic herbs such as helichrysum, lavender, St. John’s wort, lemon balm, rosemary, and thyme were (and still are) soaked in water throughout the night. The next day, people would cleanse their faces and hands with this water to purify their bodies and spirits.

Early Morning Wake-Up

For the early risers, wake up early to greet the sunrise together, as part of an Italian summer solstice tradition.

Herbal Offerings

Collect aromatic herbs like lavender, rosemary, and thyme from your garden or a nearby field. Make herbal bundles or sachets to hang around your home for protection and positivity.

Flower Crowns

Host a session to create Italian-style flower crowns. It’s a creative way to celebrate the summer season.

Al Fresco Dinner

Prepare a tasty Italian meal featuring dishes like pesto pasta, caprese salad, and homemade pizza. Enjoy your dinner outdoors, perhaps in the garden or on the balcony, to fully savor the evening.

Italian Aperitivo

Serve a traditional Italian aperitivo with cheese platters, cured meats, olives, and focaccia. Pair it with a glass of good Italian wine.

Moonlight Meditation

As the sun sets, take your gathering outdoors and meditate under the moon’s soft glow. Focus on your desires and dreams for the upcoming season.

Circle Dance

Organize a circle dance to honor the sun’s energy. Research traditional Italian dance steps or simply move to rhythmic music.

Create Solar Symbols

Craft solar symbols or mandalas using natural materials like flowers, leaves, and stones. Display them around the fire or in your home.

Divination Games

Try divination games like scrying with a bowl of water, or have a friend read your palm for a touch of mystery and fun.

Italian Stories

Share Italian stories or legends, immersing yourselves in the culture and traditions of the country.

Artisanal Gelato

Serve an assortment of artisanal Italian gelato as a refreshing dessert to cool off during the evening.

Celebrate the summer solstice in pure Italian style, enjoying the company of friends and immersing yourself in the ancient traditions of this fascinating culture.

Summer Solstice: A Night of Tradition and Togetherness

Wed Jun 21 , 2023
Dawn was just moments away, and the first glimmers of light timidly began to break through the sky. My sister and I lay on a towel spread out on the grass, watching a passing cloud being carried gently by the wind, surrendering without resistance.  I’ve always appreciated that moment of stillness, a deceptive calm that […]
